Triberg, Schwarzwald, Germany

Triberg, Germany

Disneyland anyone?

We stopped over in Triberg for a few hours as we made our way to Baden-Baden. We opted for a detour to Triberg so the boys could visit the world's largest cuckoo clock. As we discovered, there are more than just one cuckoo clock in this area. Everyone claimed to have either the biggest, best, authentic, whatever cuckoo clock that will attract eager and naive tourists like us. See my Cuckoo, Cuckoo Clocks post.

Just one of many twisty turns

Triberg is a cute Disney-esque village located around 120 kilometers from Basel in the center of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald). The town is tiny yet very touristy. The souvenir shops housed in brightly colored traditional German chalets are abound. At around 700 meters in elevation, clumps of snow were still visible throughout town, particularly near the Triberg waterfall. The weather was beautiful and the sun was reflecting off blankets of snow covering fields between villages. It was a gorgeous drive to the mountain - with lots of twists and turns!

This village in the center of the Schwarzwald became famous not for its cuckoo clock, but for the "Highest" waterfall in Germany. The Triberg waterfalls is one of the highest in Germany but definitely not the tallest (i.e., Rothbachfall near Konigssee in upper Bavaria). Our family inadvertently discovered the entrance to the waterfalls while looking for an eatery to have a snack. We found Lilie Garten Cafe, which is an extension of the main restaurant with its charming interior filled with traditional German decor. The cafe is conveniently located at the entrance to the waterfalls. As we ate our processed schnitzel, french fries and pizza, a couple of thirsty flies decided to immerse themselves completely in my glass of Coca-Cola Light. I guess I won't see those guys again.

After lunch, while my husband went to take a business call, the boys and I hiked to the waterfalls. We made it to the base of the waterfalls, but without proper shoes and not enough time, we went no further. As you can see from the photo below, there are trails that meander along the waterfalls up to the very top. I hankered to make the hike but not in heeled shoes. Maybe another time...
