After weeks of paying premium prices for food in Basel, we finally found Hieber's! OMG, this grocery chain is even better than Cora in France. The food selection is amazing and offers a plethora of foods from around the world. For 95 Euros, we filled our fridge full with everything from fresh produce to meat, and from snacks for the boys to wine for mom and dad. The same amount of food at our local market in Switzerland would have ran us $300 CHF!
My children have been so starved of familiar fruit; they were ecstatic to find the Whole Foods-like produce section at Hieber's. We also purchased Frosted Flakes cereal, Milano Mint and Oreos cookies as well as Asian hot sauce and soy sauce.
The best parts about shopping Hieber's is it's only 14 (8.5 miles) kilometers from our house and the Euros is almost equal to the Swiss Franc now. Plus, because it's across the border, we receive a VAT refund on our purchases. The French apparently doesn't offer the same refund incentive (at least I'm not aware of it)...tres mal.
